Of those BMA members registered to practice in the UK, 48% would allow assisted suicide, 41% were opposed and 11% were undecided. However, a majority (47%) would be unwilling to prescribe the drugs. In addition, those specialities who most often care for dying patients (eg. general practice, care of the elderly, cancer care, respiratory medicine, renal medicine, palliative medicine) were all opposed to the legalisation of assisted suicide.
